Our Mission

Hong Kong Scholars exists to increase the number of underprivileged young people at university. We do this by recruiting and training Masters’ and PhD researchers who lead university-style learning experiences to develop the knowledge, skills and ambition of school students.

Our strategy is threefold:

  1. Recruit and train quality postgraduate researchers.
  2. Deliver unique in-school tutorials for free to underprivileged students.
  3. Measure the qualitative and quantitative impacts of our program.

The Problem

Higher education is an engine for social mobility, supporting positive economic and social outcomes for young people. However, accessing these opportunities can be a hard route for those that come from low-income families.

The Needs of HK’s Young People

Following consultations with teachers, academics, and education innovators, it was clear that underprivileged students in Hong Kong had “low expectations of themselves and their academic ability”.

Feeding into this self-perception was a lack of academic and English support to cultivate curiosity and self-directed learning.

These students needed “inspiration for what they can become” from those outside their communities.

Our in-school program addresses these needs to improve equal access to higher education.
